Purple Power Protein Smoothie

Purple Power

This is my Friday breakfast!  End of the week, a late carby dinner in the pub the night before after hashing and a late night mean that I wake up feeling a bit bloated, sluggish and lacking energy.  Until this makes me explode into the day…Boom!

I really look forward to this because it tastes delicious and is refreshing and light.  And with the same amount of caffeine as an instant coffee – what a way to start a Friday!

The caffeine comes from Hion.com Purple Powder, a superfood supplement, in the form of Green Coffee Extract and Green Tea Extract. It also contains a whole host of healthy ingredients: Acia Berry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Goji Berry, Billberry, Pomegranate to name but a few. Its high in vitamin C, B vitamins and other nutrients.  Now it isn’t cheap but  started using it to replace Berrocca multi vitamins as they were full of artificial colourins, flavourings and sweeteners and I just didnt want to be consuming that sort of stuff.  I use the purple powder as a pick me up and as a training boost before an early morning training session. You can mix it into smoothies or mix it into a bit of water – hold your nose and down it!.  I find it more pleasant mixed into a bit of almond milk.

You can buy it from Holland and Barrett but at a high cost.  It is cheaper to buy from Hion.com direct as the more you buy the more discount you get.  Also keep an eye out on amazon as there are often half price deals on there.

You can use whichever protein powder you prefer. I also use unflavoured beef protein which I buy from My Protein.  I used this because I am lactose intolerant and therefore cant have whey protein but also because it has no additives in it. I cant see the point of “eating clean” and then having a protein powder full of artificial ingredients. And rest assured it does not taste of beef!  You can’t taste it at all and it mixes to a really smooth thick consistency.  Its a very good quality protein.

This smoothie is ideal for putting in a protein shaker and drinking on the way to work if you fancy an extra 15 minutes in bed on a Friday morning!

Purple Power Smoothie (serves 1)

Ingredients

  • 50g frozen black cherries
  • 50g frozen blueberries
  • As much ginger as you can handle! (I use about half an inch)
  • 1/2 an avocado
  • 1 scoop of protein powder of your choice
  • 1tsp purple powder
  • 250ml milk of your choice – I use unsweetened almond milk
  • 1tsp pure vanilla extract

Method

  1. Put it all in a jug (peel the ginger first)
  2. Stick blend and serve! I like to use the fruit from frozen so that it is really cold and slushy.
