Mood Lifting Super Porridge

Quinoa porridge

This is a perfect breakfast to chase away Monday morning blues. Not only is it high in protein, satisfying, delicious and quick and easy to make but it also contains raw cacao and carob.

Raw cacao is a mood lifting superfood! It triggers the release of endorphins and opium like neurochemicals which we release naturally when in love or during sexual activity!! It boosts our levels of Serotonin, a substance in our brain which is responsible for maintaining mood balance.  Low Serotonin can lead to depression. It is also high in magnesium which creates energy and combats fatigue.

As well as lifting our mood it is reported to:

  • Improve memory
  • Reduce heart disease
  • Boost immunity
  • Shrink appetite
  • Improve libido
  • Balance hormonal swings

Carob is reported to:

  • Improve digestion
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Be high in antioxidants

In the picture you see the delux option with coconut yoghurt, berries and bee pollen!  I dont eat it like this all the time!  Dont get me wrong its delicious like this and if money and calories did not need to be taken into consideration I would.  But they do. So I dont!  I tend to leave out the fancy trimmings.  But that’s entirely up to you.

The best value Raw Cacao that I have found is from which is £4.99 for 250 gr.  Once you are receiving email alerts from them they often have 30% off deals and other special offers.  However you do need to pay a delivery charge of £2.99  for orders under £10 so either team up with some friends and bulk order or stock up on their range of other healthy ingredients.  I buy their Almond or Peanut Butter, Coconut Oil and Protein Powder.

I buy my Carob Powder from and shop around for the best deal.  I was in a hurry for mine so went for the one that was available on Prime which as Indigo Nutritions at £9.99 for a kg. Its really good quality but there are cheaper options on there. The best I have seen is £2.52 for 500 gr from Buy Wholefoods Online.

With both the cacao and the carob you only need a small amount so they last for ages.

If you are on a budget look for the low budget symbol in the adaptations to further reduce the cost of this recipe.

Snip 6Top with mixed berries, coconut milk  or greek yoghurt and bee pollen

Snip 10Use oats instead of quinoa, omit the carob and spend your money on the raw cacao

Snip 2I have a small pot that is exactly the right size for a scoop of flakes.  I then just add 2 pots of milk which is the perfect ratio. No weighing or measuring required just scoop!

Capture As the ingredients are non perishable and you will want to make this again and again you do not need to worry about left overs, but there will be more recipes using raw cacao coming soon

  1. Could not seem to like your post so saying so here! I like it. The benefits if natural foods has been lost by us and I am glad we are returning to giving our bodies the nutrition it needs and also they taste great. I am particularly into seeds – love them.
